An Update and a Giveaway

This week’s post is going to be an Update and a Giveaway

I’m happy to report that even with additional temptations this weekend [It was my mother's birthday and we got her an ice-cream cake, chocolate volcano cake, and cheese cake.] I was still successful in my goal to not eat sugar. It actually wasn’t hard at all to resist, I think because it has been over two weeks, I’m just not craving the sugar the way I normally do. So that’s a plus!

Off topic:  Do you want to see the Birthday Dance of my mother that I made with the American Cancer Society’s new dance application? Here’s the link – Frances Ellen Disco Dancing (Feel free to tease her about it in comments, she loves all the attention).  ;-)

OK, back to my post.

Since I was so successful with my first (two week) commitment, I decided to make a longer and more difficult commitment next. For the next six weeks I will be continuing to avoid sugar, but I will also eliminate high fat/calorie snacks and junk food, and lose 5 pounds.

That’s a lot…But you think I can do it, right?

So that’s my new commitment.   Now for the giveaway.

Since I know my Choose You Commitment is going to get more and more difficult to stick with, I wanted to do something to increase my online support. It may sound silly, but I love getting comments of support and tips from my readers. And the more feedback I get, the more encouraged I become. So I asked the folks at the American Cancer Society if I could do a giveaway. Not only did they say yes, but they agreed to donate a Choose You Stainless Water Bottle and a Choose You Lapel Pin.

All you have to do is leave a comment on this post and you will be entered to win (I’ll announce the winner when I post next Tuesday). Any comment will do, but like I said in my first post I could use all the support I can get.

Thanks everyone…I’m looking forward to hearing from you.  :-)

  4. Thanks for your encouragement Tina. And now you’re officially in the running for the beautiful Choose You Water Bottle and Lapel Pin. Good Luck.

  5. Jill Spencer says:

Good luck with the new goal! You can do it.
I just made my commitment today to get active and need this reminder to put my health first over an extra 30 minutes of work email, spotless floors, or a tv program. Really, in the long run, which will make the difference to me?

  6. Libby says:

You can do it, and I’m going to try too ;)

  7. shannon says:

I’m just trying to figure out how y our mom can disco dance after eating three cakes

  8. @ Jill — Thanks for commenting. I’m glad you’ve made a Choose You commitment to put yourself first, even 30 minutes a day can make a huge difference in your life.

@ Libby — Hi Libby, thanks for your support, it’s very much appreciated. :-)

@ Shannon — In her defense, she had help…just not from me.

  9. Kathi says:

Your mom’s dance moves look better than mine, LOL!

It’s hard to stay motivated, but if blogging and getting encouraging comments help, hooray for that!

My encouraging comment is to be patient with yourself, don’t expect perfection but don’t settle for less than you deserve!

    BTW, love the water bottle!

  10. Rachael says:

I think it’s great that you were able to stay with your commitment! Great water bottle and BEAUTIFUL DANCE!! haha I love to dance, but don’t think anyone but the kids likes to watch me :-)

  11. Sarah says:

Even though I am a devout exerciser, I still struggle with staying motivated. One of my favorite tips for days like these is to just get dressed. After work, I get home and put my workout clothes on. I might unpack my work stuff and do a couple other things, but I have already made the commitment to exercise by putting on the clothes. It helps set the tone and get your mind mentally prepared for it. I have passed this blog on to 2 ladies I know can use the support, so keep up the great work!

  12. I would like to make it clear that I only ate a piece of my birthday ice cream cake. The volcano cake and the cheesecake I shared with my guests.

As far as the dance is concerned, I wish I could still dance like that.

  13. TerriAnn says:

You can do it – just stick with it! The yo-yo effect is dangerous to learn a new way of life that you can adopt now and keep it. Thanks!

Catherine, you are a strong lady that is capable of anything you put your mind to. Be kind and patient with yourself, the way you are with others.

  16. WOW…This is my first time doing a giveaway, and I’m so excited that so many of you are already commenting. :-)

@ Kathi — Thanks for the words of encouragement. Good luck on winning the water bottle.

@ Racheal — Dancing is a great way to get some exercise and have a bunch of fun (especially with kids). Thanks for the comment.

@ Sarah — I think the idea of getting into your workout clothes even before you’re ready is a great idea to keep on track, thanks for sharing this great tip. And I think it’s wonderful that you’ve encouraged others to join Choose You.

@ My Mother (and “so-called” supporter) — I can vouch for you, I’m pretty sure Nicole (my daughter) ate most of that ice-cream cake. As far as claiming you don’t still dance like that…What about when you go out with “friends” on Friday nights? I’m sure you get pretty wild and crazy. ;-)

@ TerriAnn — Thanks for the encouragement and for the link to your blog…It looks like you’re a pro at giveaways, you’ll have to give me some pointers.

Thanks again to everyone who is commenting.

  17. @ Kimberly — Thanks Kimberly. I’m glad you’re choosing to get healthy. But I hope you’re giving yourself a lot of time to lose 30 pounds…They say a pound a week is best. Keep me post on how your doing. :-)

@ Christine — Thanks so much for the kind words of encouragement Christine. :-)

  18. Natalie says:

  19. athenacalled says:

Nothing catches my eye like free stuff, but I must thank you for drawing my attention to the ‘Choose You’ project. I think those two words are a much needed boost of inspiration for all of us who don’t ever follow through with promises of self-love; thank you for giving me an additional mantra.

  20. just remember we only have to get it right for one day: today. let’s do this thing!!!! :) thanks for offering a giveaway.

  21. @ Natalie — Thanks Natalie.

@ athenacalled — Thanks for your wonderful comment, I’m glad you’ve been inspired by “Choose You” it really is a great project. But all the thanks has to go to the American Cancer Society.

@ Kirsten — Thanks Kirsten. Take it one day at a time…That’s great advice. :-)

  22. Sam says:

wow. That is awesome! I have tried to give up my main source of sugar.. Soda… I have not been successful yet.. that is a big feat! Good for you!!

  23. Hi Sam. Thankfully, I’ve never enjoyed soda. But I have heard that when people who drink soda stop, after a year they lose an average of 15 pounds. Thanks for your comment and support.

  24. Roxanne says:

Go for your goal. I am so excited about this movement. My goal is to each more vegetables every day..

  25. Thanks Roxanne. Eating more vegetables is a great goal. My favorite veggie is broccoli.

  26. I intend to be out of town tonight. It’s only a coincidence that it’s a Friday. Nothing “wild” going on!

All joking aside, I’m proud of the progress you’re making, Catherine. Keep up the good work. (Supportive enough for you?)

  27. Thanks mom…I think you’re starting to get the hang of it. Have fun on your night out on the town…Don’t get too crazy. ;-)

  28. Sarah says:

Congrats on reaching your 2 week goal! I’m glad I found your group, having just had my second baby 4 weeks ago, I find it difficult to put my health and needs 4th let alone first, but I’ve made a 2 week goal to put myself first at least once a day. Baby steps, right? Haha. Thanks again for all the great info!

  29. Wehaf says:

Congrats on making it two weeks! I’ve heard that it only takes three weeks to make a new habit, so you are almost there!

  30. @ Sarah — Congratulations on the new baby. I think it’s great that you are going to try and put yourself first at least once a day…good for you.

    @ Wehaf — Thanks, I think I heard that too. :-)

  31. Hi Everyone. If you commented on this post to win the Choose You water bottle and lapel pin…There is now a winner. Check it out here –

  32. Lawrence Gilbert says:

    You can do it!

  33. You’re doing a great thing for yourself. Better than a trip to the mall for something you don’t need. Your liver will love you and you’ll look and feel better.
